PART-TIME TEMPORARY/SUMMER EMPLOYMENT

The purpose of the class is to prevent accidents and enforce safety regulations at City operated swimming pool. An employee occupying a position allocated to this class is responsible for the safety of bathers and enforcement of established standards of conduct. Work is performed in accordance with department rules and regulations and supervision is received from a superior who makes work assignments and reviews work by observation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Enforce policies and regulations governing the conduct of persons at the swimming pool.
- Warns patrons against such unsafe practices as running around the edge of the pool, playing on diving boards, or bringing bottles or glass objects to the pool.
- Rescues distressed bathers and in emergencies, applies artificial respiration and first aid.
- May teach swimming skills to beginners.
- Maintains records and reports of activities.
- Performs related work as required.
Considerable knowledge of lifesaving, including modern methods of approaching, breaking holds, and carrying apparently drowned persons. Considerable knowledge of the hazards involved in swimming pool bathing. Considerable knowledge of the standard techniques of resuscitation and other first aid measures. Knowledge of the principles and methods used in teaching people to swim. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with swimming pool patrons and to give and enforce orders firmly but tactfully. Skill in the administration of first aid and artificial respiration; skill and speed in swimming. Possession of a Senior Lifesaving Certificate as issued by the American Red Cross and a Standard First Aid Certificate.
Requires High School Diploma or GED, specialized training equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education with emphasis in business, leisure service, or a closely related field; and formal training in water safety; CPR and Life Guard Certified.
Must successfully pass Level -2 criminal background screening.
