$24.64 Hourly - $51,266.67 Annual Base/Exempt

The purpose of the class is to supervise staff and oversee the overall operation of City’s Golf Course.  The class is responsible for managing all aspects of directing and supervising  a comprehensive, year-round golf program for the City, to include staff supervision, enhancing revenue and membership, developing and enforcing approved policy and procedures, facility maintenance, managing division budget, and administration within the Golf Course Division.  The class works within broad policy and organizational guidelines; plans and implements activities; reports progress of activities through periodic conferences and meetings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

· Supervises all golf staff; hires, trains, evaluates and disciplines employees.

· Supervises staff in determining the need for irrigation, seeding, fertilization, sod cutting, cutting turf grass on fairways, tees, greens, and roughs; raking sand traps, and oversees assignments to subordinate through the appropriate chain of supervision.

· Closes the golf course under adverse weather conditions and determines when the course is playable.

· Develops and administers the budget for the golf course; manages budgetary expenditures throughout the year.

· Supervises the golf operations.

· Prepares necessary reports on course usage, activities, and fees collected; maintains records and financial reports.

· Handles complaints from members and inquiries from the public.  Schedules tournaments, special events, junior golf programs, and other events.

· Coordinates and supervises the activities of the Pro Shop.  Orders equipment, supplies, and other essential materials needed in various areas, within the boundaries of the City’s purchasing procedures.

· Provides golf lessons, conduct clinics, direct golf training programs and promotes the club.

· They make sure golf tee times are properly scheduled, all golf fees are collected and that the pro shop maintains a neat appearance with a sufficient inventory of the right clothing and supplies for members or guests to purchase.

· Ensures that subordinates provide for the proper care and cultivation of shrubs, trees, and flowers; pruning, trimming and spraying. Including the application of pesticides, fertilizer, fungicides, and insecticides to treat the course.

· Oversees repairs of broken lines or valves for water system, and perform necessary repairs in times of emergency. Also assists in the planning and development of new

irrigation systems, including redesigns and modifications of existing irrigation system.

  • Performs necessary general grounds maintenance work when understaffed, to include mowing, irrigation and fertilization of greens.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge in methods, equipment and materials used in maintaining a golf course; good knowledge of general repair and maintenance procedures; good knowledge of practices and principles of effective supervision; considerable knowledge of mixing and administering chemicals used in treating turf; considerable knowledge of automatic irrigation systems.

Considerable skill in planning and assigning work to subordinates; skill in keeping records and budgetary matters.

Ability to perform work requiring a moderate amount of physical stamina outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Full understanding and skill in operating equipment used in the maintenance of golf course grounds; ability to deal effectively with supervisor, subordinates, and the general public; ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and electronically.

INVOLVEMENT WITH THINGS:

Considerable knowledge of the use of turf and landscaping equipment as it relates to maintenance of a golf course, to include tractors, mowers, airifier, top dresser, chain saw, edgers, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers and irrigation systems; motor vehicle, phone; copy and fax machine; personal computer including, but not limited to Microsoft office applications and various types of software.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

REASONING REQUIREMENTS:

Performs skilled work involving rules/systems but solves problems almost constantly.

MATHEMATICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Performs addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and/or calculates ratios, rates and percents.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

Reads technical instructions, procedures manuals, and charts to solve practical problems; composes routine and specialized reports, forms, and business letters; speaks compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Performs clerical and technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

 

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in recreational management, business administration, or a related field; or an associate degree in golf management education; a PGA Certification in general management, golf operations teaching and coaching, and/or player development; plus two (2) years of turf management which must have been in a supervisory or lead worker capacity, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

Valid Florida Driver License and noncommercial pesticide applications certificate.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Requires over five years’ experience in golf course management preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand; talk or hear, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:

The job risks exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, disease/pathogens, and toxic/caustic chemicals.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

The job requires normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
